Introducing the “LAJKONIK POLISH SONG AND DANCE ENSEMBLE OF SYDNEY”
“ Lajkonik” is a non-profit folkloric ensemble which has actively participated in the cultural and social life of the Polish and Australian society for 30 years, with the splendour of authentic Polish costumes, vitality and joy of polish songs, dances and culture. From its establishment in 1990, its Artistic Director has been Urszula Lang.
The name “Lajkonik” (pronounced Lay-kon-ik) is a well-known symbol of the old town of Krakow in Poland, and is a man on a horse celebrating the victorious deflection by the Polish people, of marauding invaders from the east in the 14th Century. It associates with great joy, celebration, dancing and singing – which is exactly what Lajkonik here in Australia is known for.
“Lajkonik’s” main objectives are to promote and encourage a knowledge and understanding of Polish music, folk dance, traditions and culture to Polish youth and children in Australia so that they value and respect their Polish heritage, to maintain ongoing links with Poland, and to promote Poland’s amazing folk culture in Australia.
“Lajkonik” can be seen at Festivals and special events within the Polish community and multicultural events in the broader community. The Ensemble can be booked for weddings and performances.
“Lajkonik’s” Sydney home is at Marayong, Rehearsals are held in the John Paul II hall, 116 Quakers Road, Marayong – Friday evenings for the Senior Group (7-9.30pm) and Sunday mornings for the junior group (9-10.15am). Visitors and new members are welcome.
